Rotherham United are short of options in midfield and should consider signing former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Jose Semedo.

The 32-year-old was an iconic figure at Hillsborough and ended his six-year stint with the club at the end of last month. After playing 167 games for the Owls, he was denied the fairytale ending to his Wednesday career after they tasted defeat in the play-off semi-finals.

Semedo is currenrly without a club and the Millers would be hard pressed to find a player more suited for a promotion push from League One.

The Portuguese midfielder has had previous success in England’s third tier after gaining promotion with Wednesday and Charlton Athletic in previous years.

His first-team opportunities have become limited over recent seasons as the Owls have undergone a rapid transformation into one of the big spenders in the Championship and are one of the favourites to gain promotion next season.

Rotherham endured a torrid season in the Championship last campaign and the Millers are expected to undergo a major facelift on the pitch.

They are currently short of options in central midfield and the signing of Semedo would not only add options in that area of the pitch but also add invaluable experience.

Despite only making 27 appearances in his last two seasons at Hillsborough, the dogged midfielder still has plenty to offer and is capable of being an real asset in League One.

With no transfer fee involved, the potential signing of Semedo would offer little to no risk for the Millers who will be bidding for a return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
