Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has expressed his delight that this afternoon’s historic B team clash with Bo’ness United has sold out – but confessed the fact only 300 will be allowed entry to Dumbarton’s C&G Systems Stadium for the tie is disappointment.
The Light Blues support snapped up all 300 tickets quickly as the Lowland League gets underway this afternoon and Wilson hopes it can continue to grab Rangers fans’ attention as the season progresses.
With no visiting fans allowed, Wilson thinks allowing some Bo’ness fans to make the trip would have made the occassion even more special for the young Gers.
“We are delighted, but not at all surprised, to see our opening game almost instantly sell out,” Wilson told Rangers TV.
Albeit we remain disappointed that the Scottish government restrictions only permit 300 to be at the game at our temporary home in Dumbarton. We share the frustration of Bo’ness United that regulations don’t allow us to welcome their fans along the game.
“That would have made an already important day, much more special. The Rangers fans in attendance will enjoy seeing our young players play and I hope that the playing identity of our B Team resonates with our fanbase. I am sure the fans will give every encouragement to our young group as they have done whether it be in Porto or Peterhead.
“Our player base will be primarily of U19 age. We will deliberately lead with a very young side, that’s what I’ve asked of our academy and that’s what we all believe in – young players being challenged and stretched. Week in, week out.”
Massive opportunity for young Rangers stars to make a big impression
While the Rangers B team will be coming up against part-time players in the Lowland League, they will be facing a host of faces who have been over the course a number of times before.
Impressing for the B team should really help propel the young Gers closer to the first-team picture and help them catch the eye of Steven Gerrard.
Although fans will no doubt focus on the results on the pitch, developing players is the main objective and Rangers will be keen to ensure the players keep that in mind if results don’t go their way.
