The 32-year-old is desperate to stay with the Yorkshire club, but Carvalhal wants the winger to prove himself again, before any new contract is offered.
“If the club were to offer me another contract, I would snap their hands off,” Carvalhal said.
“I have spoken to the manager about it. He wants me to have another season playing like I have done in the last two years. If I do that, I will get another extension on my contract. In the meantime, the club won’t be giving me a new contract.”
Wallace has been a key player for Wednesday over the past two seasons, with the midfielder making 84 appearances.
However, Wallace’s place in Wednesday’s starting line-up has come under threat this summer.
The Owls’ addition of George Boyd from Burnley, means that Wallace will face increased competition for a place in Carvalhal’s line-up next term.
Wednesday will be determined to make it third time lucky in the upcoming campaign, as they go for promotion.
Carvalhal’s side have lost in the play offs for the last two seasons, but go into next term as one of the favourites to go up to the Premier League.
