Graeme Murty’s Glasgow Rangers drew in the Old Firm derby, with David Bates playing well for the Ibrox club.

Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic were overwhelming favourites heading into the Old Firm derby against Rangers last month, but Graeme Murty’s side managed to pick up a point from the encounter.

There is no doubt that Celtic have the best team in Scotland and are much better than Rangers, but last Saturday afternoon, the Gers showed that they, too, have good players who can step up in big games.

One of the Rangers players who did well against Celtic at Celtic Park in the Scottish Premiership last Saturday afternoon was David Bates.

The 21-year-old central defender came on as a substitute for Bruno Alves after just 18 minutes and played brilliantly for the rest of the game.

The performance of the Scottish youngster was one of the reasons why Celtic could not score against Rangers and had to settle for a goalless draw.

Albion Rovers central defender Ross Perry was impressed with the performance of Bates against the Hoops and has spoken highly of his former Raith Rovers teammate.

Bates initially joined Rangers on a Development Loan from Raith Rovers in August 2016 before making the move permanent in January 2017.

Perry told The Scottish Sun about Bates: “David had plenty of potential and it’s great to see him thriving in an Old Firm game, especially at Celtic Park.

“He looked relatively comfortable as well. He was flung in at the deep end and handled it well.

“People are talking massive sums for Moussa Dembele but he was very quiet, you have to give Rangers credit for that.”

“I think David always had the qualities to play for a huge club like Rangers,” added Perry. “At Raith Rovers he came in from the youths. He was still a kid but you could see the makings of a top centre-half.”
