Rangers are reportedly interested in Fulham midfielder McDonald.
Rangers are reportedly interested in signing Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald in the January transfer window, but a move for the holding midfielder would be very harsh on one of Steven Gerrard’s most in-form players.
The 30-year-old has dropped out of the side since suffering an ankle injury, managing just eight minutes against Wolves before being omitted from the squad that beat Huddersfield Town over the weekend.
Rangers are expected to be in the market for a striker and a new number 10, to replace the losses of Umar Sadiq and Ovie Ejaria who have cut short their loans and returned to AS Roma and Liverpool respectively.
But it seems as though Gerrard is trying to bring in a holding midfielder too, in the form of McDonald – and such a move would be harsh on Ross McCrorie who has starred in recent outings.
The 20-year-old has starred in the holding role of late, playing the entire 90 minutes of Rangers last three games against St. Johnstone, Hibernian and most recently, the Old Firm derby win over Celtic.
He has starred in those matches, helping Rangers pick up 11 points from a possible 15 despite facing Hibernian twice and indeed Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic. Surely making himself first choice, McCrorie is in the form of his short career.
Signing McDonald, then, would be harsh on the Rangers academy product, as he would find himself dropped if Rangers were able to lure the Fulham star north of the border.
Steven Gerrard must seriously weigh up whether he should sign McDonald, or keep faith with the in-form McCrorie.
