Striker McCormack left Villa to join Motherwell this month.
Ross McCormack has told BBC Sport that his spell at Aston Villa was a “shambles” and believes that the Championship side made it “personal” by ostracising the versatile attacker.
The 32-year-old star, who joined Villa for a fee of £12million from Fulham in the summer of 2016 (BBC Sport), has been completely ostracised at the Midlands club despite having a contract there until the summer of 2020.
McCormack scored just three goals in 24 Villa appearances, before leaving the Midlands clubs four times on loan to Nottingham Forest, Melbourne City, Central Coast Mariners and now former side Motherwell.
The ex-Rangers star, who shone at Leeds and Fulham in the Championship, stated that he cannot fully rule out a return to Villa as his contract ends in 18 months – but did state that it is pretty obvious it is over.
“It’s been a bit of a shambles but that’s football,” McCormack said. “The club just wanted me out of the club and off the wage bill. I’m not sure about English football now. There’s a lot of politics in the game down there.
“It’s not just based on your attributes. If it was, I think I’d still be down there. It was a personal thing at Aston Villa. I can never fully shut the door on Aston Villa, but I think it’s pretty blatantly obvious my time there is done.”
McCormack made his first appearance for Motherwell since returning to Stephen Robinson’s side over the weekend, but managed just 45 minutes and was taken off at half time as the Well lost 2-1 to Championship side Ross County.
The Scotland international had little chance of breaking into the starting eleven at Villa, with the likes of Tammy Abraham, Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan ahead of him in the pecking order.
