Everton midfielder Ross Barkley has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.
Ross Barkley wants to leave Everton in the summer transfer window, according to The Sun.
It has been reported that the 23-year-old attacking midfielder wants to part company with the Toffees in order to save his England career.
“Barkley is behind Davy Klaassen in the pecking in Ronald Koeman’s squad and will not be the Dutchman’s main creative midfielder next season,” states the report in The Sun. “And he wants regular football to make sure he is in Gareth Southgate’s plans for the World Cup.”
Barkley is one of the best young attacking midfielders in England, and it would make sense for the 23-year-old to leave Everton if he thinks that he is not going to get regular playing time at the Toffees.
However, it would not make much sense for the attacking midfielder to join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.
Sky Sports have credited Tottenham with interest in Barkley, but if the Englishman wants regular playing time in order to save his England career and be part of the squad for the 2018 World Cup finals, then he should not make the switch to Spurs.
Spurs already have a well-settled starting lineup. Barkley would be a good signing for the North London outfit, but the Englishman would not be guaranteed a place in the first XI.
This means that the 23-year-old would have to settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench, at least in the opening weeks of the campaign.
