Former footballer Rodney Marsh has stated that he believes Ross Barkley should have quit Everton two years ago for the sake of his career.
Commenting on Twitter, he argues that Barkley has not progressed as a player and can no longer rightfully be regarded as one of the best prospects in the game.
Barkley was substituted early in Everton’s win over Sunderland last night, with all of Romelu Lukaku’s goals coming once he had been taken off.
Elaborating further, Marsh suggests he is either not being used correctly, or simply failing on an individual level to make the best of his ability.
Barkley started the season well enough with a goal in the draw with Tottenham, but has disappointed since then.
He was not selected for the recent England squad by Sam Allardyce, which should have acted as motivation to really lift his game, but Ronald Koeman was not happy with his contribution last night.

A player on the opposite team, Jack Rodwell, is a counter argument to Marsh’s point, with his career going on a downwards trend since leaving Everton.
He was once rated as highly as Barkley and linked with big money moves, eventually moving to Manchester City where his career stalled, and is now battling playing for strugglers Sunderland.
