Everton are said to be interested in signing Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney in the summer.
Everton midfielder Ross Barkley once told the Daily Mirror that he wanted to see Wayne Rooney return to Goodison Park.
Barkley was asked back in October 2016 if he would fear Rooney taking his place in Everton’s team, if the Manchester United man was to be signed up by Ronald Koeman.
But, to the contrary, Barkley admitted that he would love to be teammates with the England captain.
“How likely is it? I don’t know, we can hope. Maybe if it happens in the future I don’t know. Rooney is very welcome at Everton,” he said.
Barkley’s words are particularly interesting, as Rooney is reportedly set to make a switch to Everton in the summer.
The Independent suggest that Manchester United will allow Rooney to move back to the Toffees on a free transfer.
And, if Barkley does really want to link up with Rooney, then the move could help encourage the attacking midfielder to commit his future to Everton.
Barkley’s contract at Everton is set to expire at the end of next season, and a host of Premier League clubs are circling.
Barkley has scored four goals and claimed seven assists in 27 Premier League appearances this season, with Ronald Koeman understood to be determined to keep hold of the 23-year-old.
