Barkley fails to impress after Everton lost to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Ross Barkley has come in for heavy criticism following his display for Everton against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

The Toffees were on the end of a 3-1 defeat to their local rivals in a game which Barkley struggled to make an impression and could easily have been sent off for a studs-up challenge on Dejan Lovren.

Many have called for Gareth Southgate to give the midfielder more international game time following improved performances this season, but it seems his latest showing has done little to convince those on Twitter that the 23-year-old is ready to make the step up and become a Three Lions regular.

Barkley has 22 caps for England to date since making his debut in September 2013, but has not made an appearance since a 2-1 friendly win over Australia in May 2016.

He was part of Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad, but failed to make it off the bench in any of the four tournament matches, and only received his first call-up by Southgate for recent fixtures with Germany and Lithuania.

Barkley’s stats do not suggest he was anything other than poor against the Reds either, making just one successful tackle, committing four fouls and failing to create a single chance.
