Everton were once again impressive against Wolves on Tuesday evening, and one man who caught Ross Barkley’s eye was Lucas Digne.
Digne was played in something of a more advanced position for the Toffees against the Midlands outfit as Ben Godfrey took up the Frenchman’s usual spot at left-back, allowing the ex-PSG man to push on as a more attacking option.
It’s fair to say that this tactical switch worked an absolute treat as well, with Digne grabbing an assist for Everton’s opener, while also being a constant menace down the left side, putting in no fewer than six crosses.
Ex-Everton ace Barkley was clearly impressed as he was watching from home.
Barkley summed up Digne in just five words ‘wand of a left foot’.
The Frenchman has proven time and again that he’s one of the sweetest strikers of a ball in the division, especially on his left, and that was certainly evident against Wolves.
It’s performances like this that have led to Everton’s manager describing him as one of the best left-backs in Europe.
Carlo Ancelotti may be onto something when it comes to getting the best out of Digne by playing him as a midfielder rather than a wing-back as it allows him to do what he does best, while not sacrificing any sort of defensive rigidity.
