Meling is reported by the paper to be a ‘serious’ option for the Hoops in the final couple of weeks of the Scottish transfer window as Neil Lennon looks to strengthen his left-back area.
The Norwegian side are said to have rejected an offer from Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC for his services, but it appears to club are resigned to one day losing the 24-year-old.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Horneland said: “Birger will probably leave at some point.”
Sporting director Stig Inge Bjornbye meanwhile has also commented on the speculation, saying: “There is now an increase in activity around our players.”
The noises from the Norwegians’ camp don’t sound too hopeful about keeping the 10-cap international, who is a teammate of Celtic central defender Kristoffer Ajer at that level.
Celtic’s need for a left-back has never been greater now than in a number of years after the big money exit of Kieran Tierney.
With just new signing Boli Bolingoli available, who Lennon didn’t fancy playing in the recent European defeat to Cluj, the Hoops must bring in back-up and competition as a priority, or risk more calamities.
Winning leagues and trophies with Rosenborg, Meling has a solid playing history and profile. He’s made over 100 appearances for the club, 29 of which have come in European competition (Transfermarkt).
He’s also previously impressed against Celtic in UEFA Champions League qualifying in the past.
