Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose is reportedly set to stay.
A number of Tottenham Hotspur players – such as Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele – are being linked with summer exits, but one player who looks set to stay is Danny Rose.
The Telegraph report that whilst Manchester United were interested in signing Rose, they are now looking at other targets and won’t be pursuing a left back this summer.
That leaves Rose with a lack of options in terms of leaving Spurs. Last summer, he hinted that he wanted to move back up north, though Everton are unlikely to be of a high enough standing for the England international.
In truth, it’s been a tough 18 months for Rose. In the first half of the 2016-17 season, he was arguably the best left back in the Premier League, but injury and his outspoken comments saw him lose his place with Tottenham to Ben Davies.
Tottenham may have been looking to cash in on Rose this summer in a big-money move, but the signs are pointing to him staying in North London, and whilst it may not be the best outcome for either party, it does have an upside for Spurs.
Keeping Rose for another year saves any upheaval in the Tottenham ranks, and also means that Spurs can plot their move for Fulham star Ryan Sessegnon as a replacement next summer.
Sessegnon, 18, has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time now, but Fulham’s promotion to the Premier League means that the teenager is staying at Craven Cottage for another year, with Tottenham once again expected to be keen.
Rose staying – whether wanted or not – gives Tottenham a bridge to 2019 when they can look to target Sessegnon as a replacement at left wing back, and give Spurs the replacement they truly want rather than settling for another left back this summer if Rose had gone, with Sessegnon unavailable.
