Rory McIlroy has expressed his delight after the PGA Tour announced some of the changes that will be implemented from 2028.
Brian Rolapp has certainly delivered on his plans to overhaul the PGA Tour. The CEO had previously confirmed that he wanted to provide more details ahead of the Travelers Championship.
What do you make of the planned changes to the PGA Tour?
What do you like? What concerns you about the changes?
There are still some issues to be ironed out. But the PGA Tour has confirmed that there are plans for two tiers: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series.
Rory McIlroy responds as the PGA Tour unveils changes for 2028
The Championship Series will be designed for all of the top players, while the Challenger Series will offer players a chance to be promoted to the tour’s top table.
The full schedule is set to be announced next year.
Elsewhere, big changes are also coming to the playoffs, with matchplay set to be involved. Meanwhile, it appears that East Lake is unlikely to continue to regularly host the Tour Championship.
There are some contentious decisions, including the news that players in track one will be unable to drop down into the Challenger Series. That is likely to upset some players, depending on which events do find themselves on track two.

Rory McIlroy was not exactly complimentary when speaking about the potential changes ahead of the US Open.
However, as reported by Golf Channel, he has released a statement in which he suggested that he was pleased with the announcement.
“Today’s announcement is a positive step for professional golf. As more details emerge, it is encouraging to see the PGA Tour reaffirming the importance of meritocracy and creating a structure that will serve both players and fans well into the future I’ve always been proud to compete around the world, and the collaboration between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour is one founded in the betterment of the game globally,” he said.
“The commitment to elevate some of these historic international tournaments and national opens is incredibly important for the game and something I’m very supportive of. Over the last few years, golf has faced a period of uncertainty and division, which has not been in the best interests of the players, or the fans of the game. Today, we are putting the fans first, and I am excited about the future of our sport.”
The issue the PGA Tour may face with Rory McIlroy
It is no wonder that McIlroy feels that the news is a positive step for the PGA Tour. Rolapp’s track record suggests that exciting times lie ahead.
However, there is a potential issue with McIlroy that has to be considered.
The PGA Tour has confirmed that purses for Championship events will be at least $20 million. With that, sponsors are going to expect all of the big names to be involved on a consistent basis.
They do not get much bigger than McIlroy. So if he adopts a schedule like the one he has had in 2026, then a lot of sponsors are set for disappointment.
If it is mandatory for players to be in the field at each event, there may end up being something of a tense standoff with the Northern Irishman, who clearly does not want to play all the time at this stage of his career.
