BT Sport commentator Rory Hamilton shared what Rangers star Allan McGregor during the win over Braga at Ibrox during a second-half melee. Borna Barisic was particularly angry, after a foul in the Rangers half.

A brace from James Tavernier and an extra-time winner from Kemar Roofe – his fourth goal in two games – saw Rangers progress past Braga into the Europa League semi-finals. They will now take on RB Leipzig.

In a hotly-contested clash, Rangers were already playing against 10 men after Roofe had gone through and was taken out by Tormena. Braga were pushing. A foul saw Barisic and a number of Rangers players react angrily.

A few moments after the incident, Hamilton spoke of McGregor. He stated the 40-year-old rushed out of his goal to pull his teammates back – using his experience to know that Rangers needed to keep their discipline.

“He was the one, when that melee erupted, he was the one out of his goal just ensuring that the players around him kept calm, kept their head. He has been here before, and done it all before,” Hamilton said in commentary.

Hamilton on McGregor: Rangers star knows what it takes

McGregor, 40, was first choice during the run to the 2008 UEFA Cup final – which eventually saw Rangers lose 2-0. He played all six Champions League games and then kept four clean sheets in the six knockout UEFA Cup games.

He suffered an injury, ruling him out of the semi-finals and then final against Zenit. This time around, he will be desperate to put those demons to bed. He knows what it takes, he knows how much it means.

Wouldn’t it be amazing, with McGregor expected to leave Rangers an retire this summer, if his last game for the Gers is a Europa League final against either West ham or Frankfurt…
