Roofe may have to be patient at Leeds, just as Beckford was before him

The Leeds United great had a slow start to life at Elland Road and the same may happen with their summer signing.

When Leeds United signed Kemar Roofe from Oxford United in the summer, he was touted by some as the next Jermaine Beckford.

After all, just as Roofe had scored for fun in League Two, Beckford had a superb record for non-league Wealdstone, netting 54 goals in just 82 matches.

It was that form that earned Beckford a move to Leeds. However, while he ended his time at Elland Road as a legend, things did not start out that way.

Loan spells at Carlisle United and Scunthorpe United quickly followed and Beckford had to wait well over a year for his first Leeds goal.

No one expects Roofe to wait anywhere near as long to get off the mark at Elland Road, but the simple fact is Leeds fans have to be patient.

Earlier this week we suggested that a January loan move for Roofe could be the best option for all concerned, and while not all Leeds fans agreed it worked wonders for Beckford.

Roofe is further along in his development than the Elland Road favourite was at this stage of his career. However, he still has a long way to go to and the step up from League Two to the Championship is sizeable, just as it was from non-league to League One for Beckford.

If he learns from manager Garry Monk, works hard and stays patient, there is no reason Roofe cannot go on to score plenty of goals just as the Jamaica international did before him, but it may not be the smooth sailing some expected.
