Ronny Deila says that Celtic fans should be praising chief executive Peter Lawwell.
Brendan Rodgers sensationally quit Celtic for Leicester City last week and some Hoops supporters have laid blame at Lawwell’s feet.
The Northern Irishman failed to get deals for some of his summer targets over the line – most notably John McGinn – and the Bhoys supremo had been accused of hindering Rodgers’s attempts in the transfer market.
Nevertheless, Deila, Rodgers’s predecessor at Parkhead, says that Lawwell is an ‘unbelievably good leader’ and claims that the club is in safe hands despite the 46-year-old’s departure.
He told Celts Are Here: “Peter Lawwell is an unbelievably good leader. The job Peter does for the club is very important and the consistency he brings in the role is also great for the club.
“Even though Brendan had left, I knew Celtic would be in good hands with Peter.
“The Celtic fans should be praising him, he has the club very well organised and keeps control of the clubs spending, you just have to look at the last ten years with Rangers to know he’s doing a good job.”
It remains to be seen who Lawwell and his colleagues hire as Rodgers’s long-term replacement.
Neil Lennon has won both of his games in charge since returning to Glasgow on an interim basis, but time will tell if the iconic figure, who played for and managed the club for four years, gets a second bite at the cherry.
