Vieira left Leeds in the summer to join Italian side Sampdoria.
It has been a difficult few months for Ronaldo Vieira. Surprisingly exiting Leeds in the summer to join Serie A side Sampdoria, the midfielder has been afforded just 26 minutes of football.
Meanwhile, the England youth international has had to watch his old side shine under Marcelo Bielsa, as they continue to steamroll their way to promotion. They sit in first place in the Championship.
Vieira impressed for Leeds last season, clocking up 32 league and cup appearances for the Yorkshire outfit. Since making his debut in May 2016, clocking up 71 matches for the Whites.
Bielsa’s side do lack depth in midfield. The Argentine’s 4-1-4-1 system has four players that operate in the middle of the second four, in Samu Saiz, Adam Forshaw, Mateusz Klich and Lewis Baker.
But other than Kalvin Phillips in the holding role, Leeds have little cover. It has seen Thorp Arch academy product Phillips play every single match for the Whites this season, even in the Carabao Cup.
If Leeds are to enter the January transfer window for new additions, adding cover for Phillips is key. With Vieira struggling for game time, he will surely be a viable option for Bielsa’s men.
Vieira was sold for £7.7million by Leeds in the summer (BBC Sport), but returning him to the side would give the Whites a bit of steel and added bite, something which is crucial to a promotion charge.
Phillips has been instrumental, and arguably the club’s best player in their hunt for a place in the Premier League. Losing him would be a bitter blow, but landing Vieira on loan would soften his absence.
