Lionel Messi is undoubtedly one of the greatest footballers of all-time.
You don’t need us to tell you that. In fact, the above sentence has probably been written a million times over the past 15 years.
However, even to this day, there’s still one man Messi is compared to above anyone else – and it’s not Cristiano Ronaldo.
Indeed, as a diminutive, left-footed, Argentine attacker, Messi was born to be compared to Diego Maradona, and, in the eyes of some, the debate between Messi and Maradona is still ongoing.
Now, the legendary Brazilian striker, Ronaldo, has shared his verdict on this debate.
Lionel Messi is now the outright all-time World Cup record goalscorer! How many goals will he end up with?
Messi has five goals this World Cup already! Is the GOAT debate with Ronaldo over?
Ronaldo responds to Messi vs Ronaldo question
Speaking on Rade Ronaldo, the World Cup icon was asked which player was better – Messi or Maradona.
The Brazilian found himself completely unable to answer, claiming that it was impossible to separate the pair.
The legend conceded that Messi and Maradona, along with Pele, are among the greatest players of all-time.
“It’s the kind of question that doesn’t really have an answer, because you can’t choose just one. You can’t choose, right?” Ronaldo said.
“I think Diego was wonderful. In an era when football was different. Maybe football was much more competitive in Diego Maradona’s time.
“But you can’t, you can’t. I can’t decide who was better. I think the two of them were extraordinary, at a level… Pelé and those two, for me, were the greatest of all time.”
As great as Maradona was during his time, it’s becoming harder and harder to make the case for him in this argument.
Messi has won way more at club level, and, on top of that, he is now the top World Cup goalscorer of all-time.
Ultimately, there aren’t many metrics in footballing history that Messi doesn’t top, and, at this point, you’d find it very difficult to make the case for Maradona being better.
