Everton beat Sunderland 2-0 in their most recent match at Goodison Park.
Everton boss Ronald Koeman has told ESPN that Idrissa Gueye did surprise him by scoring his first goal for the Goodison Park side yesterday.
Gueye finished well for Everton during their comfortable 2-0 win against Sunderland.
It was the Senegal international’s first goal since moving to Everton from Aston Villa last summer.
And even though Everton have been working on getting more goals from their midfielders in training, Koeman admits he was slightly shocked to see Gueye on the scoresheet.
“On one side, yes, I was surprised because it is his first one,” Koeman said. “The other side, no, because he did a lot of finishing — what we try to do for strikers we also do for midfielders.
“We need more goals from our midfielders. It was a great finish. I hope it is not the last.”
Everton’s victory over Sunderland was never really in doubt from the moment that Gueye put them in front.
The Toffees were the dominant side for much of the match, and sealed the three points late on through Romelu Lukaku.
Everton’s victory has extended their strong run of form, which has seen Koeman’s side start to put pressure on the top six.
The Toffees are currently in seventh spot in the Premier League table, but they are only four points behind Manchester United, who occupy the space directly above them.
