Everton manager Ronald Koeman has taken to Twitter in order to react to his side’s 2-1 home defeat to Lyon in the Europa League.

Having snatched a point in the 1-1 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, Everton were in desperate need of a result when they took on Lyon on Thursday night, given their torrid start to the season domestically and continentally.

With just two wins in eight Premier League games, coupled with only one point from two Europa League outings, Everton went into their meeting with Lyon searching for a pick-me-up – but what they got was another defeat.

Lyon grabbed an early lead at Goodison Park when Mason Holgate fouled left back Marcal inside the penalty area, and Nabil Fekir stepped up to dispatch past Jordan Pickford for the opening goal.

In the second half, just moments after starting a fracas over a challenge with goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, Ashley Williams powered a header into the net from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free kick, before another Sigurdsson free kick hit the post as Everton gathered momentum.

However, there was a sting in the tail, as former Chelsea striker Bertrand Traore flicked home a nonchalant winner – with the aid of a deflection – to give Lyon all three points and pile the pressure on Koeman.

With no wins in three Europa League games now compounding Everton’s Premier League misery, Koeman is clinging onto his job, and the Dutchman took to Twitter late on Thursday to send a message to fans.

Koeman admitted that it was ‘another frustrating night’ for Everton, but urged fans and players to keep their heads up and attempt to bounce back against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
