Everton advanced into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, beating Sunderland 3-0 in a much-needed in win at Goodison Park.
Manager Ronald Koeman decided to rotate much of his line-up, and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring, turning home from inside the box after build-up play from Nikola Vlasic and Davy Klaassen.
Calvert-Lewin then grabbed his second of the game, latching onto Sandro Ramirez’s pass before firing high into the roof of the net, and Oumar Niasse sealed a 3-0 win by taking down Tom Davies’ cross and smashing a half volley into the top corner.
Everton got the win they needed and deserved, and have now set up a last 16 clash with Chelsea, with a visit to Stamford Bridge on the cards next month.
The result will serve as a major boost for manager Koeman, who has watched his side lose 3-0 to Tottenham, 3-0 to Atalanta and 4-0 to Manchester United this month in what has been a tricky few weeks.
The pressure hasn’t completely lifted from Koeman, but the Dutchman has now got a morale-boosting win ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth at Goodison Park.
After the final whistle, manager Koeman took to Twitter to send a message to fans, stating that he was happy with the win and felt everybody worked hard to get the result, before looking ahead to the Bournemouth game, where he will be looking for just a second league win of the season.
