The Dutchman was a potent goalscoring threat during his playing career.
BARCELONA
Everton have a great coach in Ronald Koeman, but he is also a fantastic former player.
The Dutchman had an illustrious career with the likes of Ajax, PSV and Barcelona, as well as the Dutch international team.
But his most extraordinary characteristic was his goalscoring ability for a defender.
He was considered one of the finest defenders of his generation and a potent threat from set-pieces and on the attack. In fact, he scored 26 goals in one season at PSV. All in all, he played 685 club games in his career, scoring an incredible 239 goals.
So, do Everton need their defenders to provide more goals under the Dutchman?
Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines are potent threats going forward when they are in the mood. The Irishman’s contribution is good, with four goals in 27 games but Baines can do better than his two in 22 games.
Everton’s Seamus Coleman celebrates scoring their second goal
The centre-backs are not proving enough of a threat from set-pieces. Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori have just one goal between them this season.
If Everton were sharing the goals around more, perhaps they could be chasing a top four spot this season.
The defenders might need to provide more attacking threat if Everton are to go up a gear.
