The Blues are currently second in the table with 13 points from their first five games.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has told his pre-match press conference that it will be impossible for Everton to challenge for the title this season.

The Toffees have made a flying start to the campaign, picking up 13 points from their first five games.

That leaves them sitting second in the table behind leaders Manchester City, who have won all of their games so far.

Talk is already rife about whether they could be title contenders this season, especially after Leicester City’s surprise success last season.

However, their manager has seemingly moved quickly to put an end to such ambitious talk.

“I am realistic. If I tell you that we will fight for the title, most people would say that man is crazy. Come on,” he told his pre-match press conference.

“Why do we need to change our mind about our aspiration and our ambition? After 13 points from five games? No. The big teams have much more quality. If they don’t disappoint like last year, it will be impossible.”

It would certainly be unwise for Everton to get ahead of themselves at this early stage of the season.

Last year Manchester City had picked up 15 points at this point but ended up finishing fourth and 15 points behind Claudio Ranieri’s champions.

It was the same in the 2014/14 season when Arsenal topped the table with 12 points after five games but finished fourth and seven points behind champions Manchester City.

Both examples demonstrate that it is foolish to think too far ahead after just five weeks of the season and Koeman is wise to temper expectations.
