Everton have brought in six new signings this summer, with Ronald Koeman making wholesale changes to his squad.

Ronald Koeman has refuted claims that Wayne Rooney will become Everton captain at his latest press conference, which was broadcast on the club’s official Facebook page.

Rooney has been brought to Everton this summer, and Koeman has already spoken positively about the impact that the former Manchester United man has had on the dressing room.

However, the Dutch boss insists that Rooney has not come to be Everton captain.

Instead, Phil Jagielka will continue to wear the armband, with Garry Barry and Leighton Baines set to deputise, if the centre-back is not playing.

“We’ll keep it the same. Phil is the captain, Barry is the second captain and Leighton Baines is the third captain,” Koeman said.

Rooney is expected to have a key role to play at Everton, on and off the field, over the coming campaign.

The England international’s return to Goodison Park has created great excitement, and Rooney’s showings in pre-season have even very encouraging.

Everton’s competitive campaign begins tomorrow, when they take on Ružomberok from Slovakia in Europa League qualifying.
