Everton have had a long-standing interest in Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton boss Ronald Koeman is planning to ask the Toffees’ board to make a bid for Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk this summer.

Koeman is expected to be backed with a considerable amount of funds, and Van Dijk is one of his top targets.

The Dutch defender has been linked with the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea recently, but Koeman has not given up hope of convincing the powerful centre-back to move to Goodison Park.

And Koeman reportedly plans to ask Farhad Moshiri to submit a take it or leave it offer to Southampton.

The Saints are said to be asking for £55 million for Van Dijk, but Everton are hopeful they may drop their valuation – should a bid actually bid made.

Southampton's Virgil van Dijk reacts

Van Dijk has developed a reputation as one of the finest defenders in the Premier League, with his performances over the last two campaigns being highly impressive.

It seems unlikely that the former Celtic man will remain at St. Mary’s next season, given the sheer amount of interest in him.

If Van Dijk does move to Everton he will be in competition with the likes of Ashley Williams and Ramiro Funes Mori for a first-team place.
