Ronald Koeman now needs a favour from Sam Allardyce and Everton over Davy Klaassen

Ronald Koeman has been appointed as the new Netherlands boss.

Ronald Koeman paid the price for a torrid start to the season as Everton boss, as he was sacked in October – but he is now back in management having landed a new job earlier this month.

The 54-year-old enjoyed a strong first season at Everton with a seventh-placed finish, but whilst he was backed heavily with new signings last summer, he struggled to pick up results and was promptly sacked after a 5-2 home defeat to Arsenal in October.

Now though, the Dutchman is back in the game, having penned a deal with the Netherlands national team at the start of February, turning his hand to international management after 17 years in the domestic scene.

Koeman inherits a squad which failed to quality for the last two major tournaments despite finishing third at the 2014 World Cup, and he does have talents such as Virgil van Dijk, Stefan de Vrij, Kevin Strootman, Quincy Promes and Bas Dost.

However, the former Southampton boss may intriguingly now need a favour from Everton, as midfielder Davy Klaassen should be key for Koeman – yet he is far from that under Sam Allardyce at Goodison Park.

Koeman splashed the cash to sign former Ajax captain Klaassen last summer, banking on his goalscoring ability from midfield having found the net 55 times in 181 games for Ajax, whilst he has also notched four goals in 16 caps for the Netherlands.

For Everton though, Klaassen has made no impact at all, and hasn’t even played in the Premier League since September, having been completely frozen out by Koeman’s successor Allardyce.

Everton won’t finish in the top six and are unlikely to go down, and fans are calling for midfielder Klaassen to finally be given a chance under Allardyce in the final months of the season, to allow him to adjust to Premier League football.

With EURO 2020 qualifiers set to begin in September, Koeman will want to see Klaassen playing regularly and firing on all cylinders for his Netherlands side – but he will need a favour from Everton and Allardyce in order to get that, unless the midfielder gives up on his Toffees career and moves on this summer.
