Everton have been linked with Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson for much of the transfer window so far.

According to Wales Online, Ronald Koeman has told Everton’s board that signing Gylfi Sigurdsson could be the difference between his side making it into the Champions League this season.

Everton have been struggling to get a deal over the line for Sigurdsson for much of the season so far.

The Toffees have failed to reach an agreeable price with Swansea for the attacking midfielder.

However, Koeman’s determination to land Sigurdsson has led to him making a pitch to the Merseyside club’s board.

Koeman has reportedly told Everton hierarchy that signing Sigurdsson would be the difference maker in helping the Toffees breach the top four.

While it is a persuasive argument, it is also a risk for Koeman to take – as he is putting extra pressure on.

Everton’s ambitions to break into the Champions League are well known, and their spending has been highly impressive this summer.

But, even with Sigurdsson, breaking into the top four in the Premier League looks to be an extremely tough test.

And Koeman may be unnecessarily raising expectations by promising Champions League qualification with Sigurdsson in his squad.
