Everton’s Ross Barkley has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur in recent times.
Ronald Koeman has said at his latest press conference, which was broadcast on Everton’s official Facebook page, that Ross Barkley needs to sign a new contract at Goodison Park or risk being sold.
Barkley’s current deal at Everton expires at the end of next season, and he is yet to pen new terms.
Koeman insists that he is not prepared to give the attacking midfielder a timescale of when he needs to sign a new deal by.
However, the Dutch boss did suggest that Barkley could be sold in the summer – unless he commits his future to the Merseyside club.
“Ross is a boy from Everton & what we need to show to him is the best reasons to stay,” Koeman said.
“The player by himself needs to understand it’s not an ultimatum. I spoke to Ross about a new contract. Now it’s up to the board
“He needs to sign a new contract or you sell the player.
“You need to make a decision that the club knows what will happen next year. That’s normal business – not like an ultimatum.”
Barkley’s Everton future is uncertain at the same time that Romelu Lukaku’s is.
Lukaku has hinted that he won’t sign a new contract at Everton, in what will be a major blow for the Toffees.
Everton will not want to lose Barkley in the same transfer window as Lukaku, but the England international has been linked with a host of clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur have been most strongly linked with Barkley recently (Daily Mirror), with Mauricio Pochettino believed to be keen to bring the playmaker to White Hart Lane.
