Southampton were dumped out of the Capital One Cup by Liverpool on Wednesday evening.
Ronald Koeman has told the Daily Echo that the balance in Southampton’s squad has been really poor in recent weeks.
The Saints have lost their last three matches, and they were hammered 6-1 by Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening.
Koeman was understandably frustrated with that defeat, and the Dutch manager has suggested that his side’s transitional play needs to improve.
“Of course in the last few weeks I think it’s one of our qualities and we know we can play good football, we can create, we can score,” he said.
“The balance at the moment between attacking and defending is poor, is really poor.”
Southampton’s performance against Liverpool was highly disappointing, especially as they had taken the lead in the contest.
Koeman’s men raced out of blocks and scored through Sadio Mane, but they relented and Liverpool made them pay.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were outstanding in the match, and they fully deserved the win, which booked their place in the semi-finals.
The task for Southampton will be to bounce back from this defeat as quickly as possible, with their next fixture coming against struggling Aston Villa at the weekend.
If the Saints can beat Villa, they could move up as high as sixth in the Premier League table – and that would help to bring some positivity back to St. Mary’s.
