Ronald Koeman admits Everton missed out on Memphis Depay, and it looks a major blow

Everton boss Ronald Koeman has said that he made a move to sign Memphis Depay from Manchester United.

Ronald Koeman’s has told the Daily Star that Everton missed out on buying Memphis Depay in the summer, and that is looking like a major blow now.

Everton have struggled going forward this term, with their lack of pace and width hurting them.

Depay could have solved that problem, if he was at Goodison Park, but, despite being on the Toffees radar, Koeman was unable to bring him to Merseyside.

“Of course the club didn’t get an agreement with Man United and Depay chose to move to Lyon,” Koeman said.

“He’s still a young player, he’s one of the Dutch talents for the future. He’s always dangerous even when he’s not on his level in the game he has qualities in free kicks and shots outside the box – he’s that dangerous player we need to control.

“It’s the past and I’m not the right man to explain why something is not done. He didn’t play a lot for United and he’s still a young player. I like the player and we tried [to sign him] but we couldn’t reach an agreement.”

Everton are likely to get a first-hand view at what they are missing tonight, as they face Lyon in the Europa League.

Depay has made an encouraging start to life with the Ligue 1 side, scoring two goals and claiming three assists in the French league.

And his skill set would have made the perfect attacker for Everton to utilise at this moment in time.

The Toffees have suffered with a lack of pace and trickery going forward, and they are both qualities which Depay possesses in abundance.

Everton now may be forced to watch on with regret, as Depay continues to show Koeman what he missed out on.
