The Toffees manager has Duncan Ferguson breathing down his neck.

Ronald Koeman has revealed that former Everton star Duncan Ferguson regularly urges him to re-sign Wayne Rooney, as quoted by the Metro.

Rooney made his name as a teenager at Goodison Park, scoring 17 goals in 77 appearances in two seasons as a regular in the club’s first team before moving to Manchester United as an 18-year-old.

The England captain has had an illustrious career at Old Trafford over the last 12 years, but his role in the team is now under scrutiny after a perceived drop in performance.

He has played 14 times competitively for the club so far this season but is no longer a guaranteed starter, and speculation is rife that Jose Mourinho may be prepared to let him leave either in January or next summer.

Unsurprisingly, this has sparked suggestions that he could be set for a sensational return to his boyhood club Everton.

Whilst that talk has been played down by many at Goodison Park, Koeman has admitted that Rooney’s former Toffees teammate Ferguson begs him “every day” to bring the star back to Merrseyside.

Koeman said, via the Metro: “[Rooney] still has season tickets at Everton, because he’s a good friend of Duncan.

“Duncan has asked me every day, ‘can we get Rooney in? Can we get Rooney in?'”

It is unclear just how much of a possibility that move is at this stage, but it is speculation that has certainly got fans up and down the country talking.

If it becomes clear that his time at Old Trafford is up, Rooney may well favour a return to the club where he made his name, although he has inevitably been linked with a big-money move across the Atlantic to join MLS.
