Ronald de Boer has told Sky Sports Scotland that he wishes Giovanni van Bronckhorst was given more time at Rangers, after the Ibrox club sacked the Dutchman last week – and a week later, have announced the hiring of Michael Beale.

Van Bronckhorst lost his role as manager after a woeful start to the season. Nine points behind Celtic, a lack of plan B, poor summer signings and the title of becoming the worst-ever side to play in the Champions League group stage.

Injuries have played their part in van Bronckhorst’s sacking. He has now been replaced by Beale, who returns to the club having worked under Steven Gerrard before following Gerrard to Villa. Now, he returns, but this time as manager.

De Boer, who played 129 times for Rangers between 2000 and 2004 and won four honours, gave his take on Rangers sacking his fellow countryman. He thinks van Bronckhorst deserved more time and wished he stayed on as gaffer.

“Last year people from Scotland told me does he deserve a statue because he put Rangers back in Europe. Everybody was thrilled that he was their manager and now six months later he is out,” de Boer said, as per Sky Sport Scotland.

“It changes so quickly and they don’t have the patience, unfortunately. He knows that is part of being a manager of a club like Rangers. It’s sad because he had a lot of injuries. I wish they could have stood with him a little bit longer.”

He probably did deserve more time, given he masterminded Rangers’ run to the Europa League final. Of course, he also won the Scottish Cup. But summer signings and injuries have hampered Rangers. Fans began to turn.

When those injuries and summer signings did not work, Rangers and van Bronckhorst did not offer a plan B. That is down to the manager. Beale comes in and importantly, will add a freshness – a new vibe at Ibrox. Harsh, but needed.
