Ron-Robert Zieler comments on Leicester City future; would Everton have been better option?

The German keeper looks likely to leave Leicester City in the summer but his long-mooted move to Everton doesn’t appear to be on the cards.

Ron-Robert Zieler may be a certified World Champion but that has counted for nothing with Kasper Schmeichel in inspired form in between the sticks for Leicester City.

While the German clearly arrived at the King Power Stadium from relegated Bundesliga outfit Hannover as back up to The Foxes’ Great Dane, he may have expected to have featured more than 13 times in all competitions. Even his nine Premier League appearances were only the result of Schmeichel breaking his right hand in November.

Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that Zieler is considering a return to his homeland in the summer – with a return to second division promotion challengers Hannover a possibility.

“All that counts for me now is my difficult situation at Leicester. It’s not an easy situation, but I have to confront it,” the 28-year-old former Manchester United youngster told ESPN.

“Something can always happen, and I wouldn’t forgive me to have to return to goal without being ready. Independent of what happens in the summer, Hannover will always remain something special for me.

“But I know that you can never rule anything out in football.”

Zieler will know that first-team football is a necessity if he is to earn his place back in Germany’s national squad ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

However, perhaps a move to Everton rather than Leicester in the summer would have been the better option for all parties.

According to The Guardian, The Toffees have long held an interest in the goalkeeper, who once spent a short spell on loan at Northampton Town from United.

And with speculation suggesting that Ronald Koeman may be forced into the market for a goalkeeper in the summer due to doubts around Joel Robles and Maarten Stekelenberg, Everton could have saved themselves the trouble, not to mention some sloppy goals, if they had challenged Leicester for Zieler’s signature last year.
