It’s fair to say that there has been one story dominating the footballing news cycle this week – Romelu Lukaku’s bombshell interview with Sky Italy.

Lukaku has made no secret of his displeasure at Chelsea and his desire to return to Inter Milan, and as you may well imagine, this interview has sent shockwaves throughout the footballing world.

Of course, the main clubs affected are Chelsea and Inter Milan, but perhaps this could have repercussions in north London.

Indeed, one interesting moment of Lukaku’s interview was the point where he spoke about Lautaro Martinez.

“I miss Lautaro Martinez, I could die on the pitch for him since day one I met him,” Lukaku said.

“Lautaro Martinez coming here with me at Chelsea in the future? No. Lautaro, you can stay in Milan, I’ll be back there.”

Make no mistake about it, Martinez will have seen these comments, and you have to wonder whether or not his future will be affected by this.

Tottenham are reportedly very keen on Martinez, with some claiming that they’re expected to bid for the Argentine in the coming months, but after these comments, will the striker be keen to leave San Siro?

Think about it, Martinez tasted incredible success with Lukaku at Inter, he reached a Europa League final alongside the Belgian, while they also won Serie A together last term.

Tottenham could well come knocking in the coming weeks, but Martinez may want to wait and see how this Lukaku situation plays out, because if the Belgian is coming back to Italy, the Argentine will almost certainly want to play alongside him.

Lukaku’s comments may have inadvertently cost Spurs the chance to sign Martinez, which is a massive shame as he’s been described as a ‘spectacular’ player by Lionel Messi in the past.
