Gary Neville has said on The Overlap that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would not sign Romelu Lukaku, who has recently joined Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.

The former Manchester United defender believes that Lukaku does not fit into Liverpool manager Klopp’s playing style and philosophy.

The Sky Sports pundit has also claimed that the former United striker, now back at Chelsea, would not suit the way Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola plays.

As reported by BBC Sport, Chelsea have paid Inter Milan £97.5 million to re-sign the Belgium international.

What Gary Neville has said

Neville said on The Overlap, as transcribed by Football365: “Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t sign Lukaku in a million years. Neither would probably Pep Guardiola but Chelsea are the club that have had that type of striker.

“A Costa, a Drogba, a single point striker, that physical presence that wants to carry that line. They’ve had that in their armoury for 20 years. It suits Chelsea Football Club. He wouldn’t press from the front so he’d never suit Jurgen Klopp.

“He would never suit Old Trafford. The fans up there need a personality up front. Cavani suits Old Trafford. I know he’s probably past his best years but he works a lot harder than Lukaku off the ball.

“I’m not saying he’s better – Lukaku will score 25 goals for Chelsea but he doesn’t suit United. He wouldn’t suit Liverpool.”

Does Gary Neville have a point?

Lukuku is one of the best strikers in the world, and there is no doubt that he would make Chelsea better and more potent in attack.

The former Everton star would be a focal point for the Blues, would hold the ball up, and would score goals without taking too many chances.

However, as Neville points out, the Belgian is not going to press from the front and would not really close down opposition defenders – well, not to the extent Klopp and Guardiola want their attacking players to.

That is not Lukaku’s game.

However, if you gave Liverpool manager Klopp the chance to sign Lukaku and said that he need not worry about the transfer fee, would the German take it?
