Romario Vieira’s first-team hopes at Leeds perhaps boosted after latest display

Romario Vieira will be hoping to follow in his brother’s footsteps at Leeds United.

Unlike his brother Ronaldo, Romario Vieira is still awaiting his first-team debut for Leeds having spent all of his time with the Yorkshire club playing for the under-23 side.

Vieira has shown plenty of glimpses of his quality and his potential during his time with the Whites, but unfortunately for the 19-year-old, he has been competing for a place in the team where Leeds arguably look to be at their strongest, with his twin brother amongst the players blocking his path to the senior side.

But perhaps the teenager’s latest performance for Carlos Corberan’s side just provides the slightest hint that his chances of breaking into Thomas Christiansen’s team in the future have been boosted slightly.

Vieira was selected for the under-23 side’s clash with Huddersfield Town at Elland Road on Monday night, and it was a successful night for the team as Jay-Roy Grot scored the game’s only goal.

For Vieira, it was perhaps something of a turning point as he dropped deeper to play as part of a back three. And, despite not quite having the stature of a stereotypical centre-back, there can be no doubt that the youngster showed signs that suggest that playing in defence may leave him with another path to venture down in his quest for first-team football.

Being part of the back three allowed Vieira to demonstrate some brilliant passing. He was more than comfortable to mix it up with some short passing and some much more ambitious balls across the pitch – that rarely seemed to miss their intended target.

With Christiansen sticking with a back four, it seems that there is almost no chance of Vieira coming into the side at centre-back unless there is a dramatic injury crisis, but if ever decides to deploy a back three, the teenager has to be considered if his most recent performance is a sign of things to come.

He appears to have the potential to be the ball-playing option that can help elevate a back three if he is given a chance to develop in the role.

So while it may still be a while before Leeds fans get to see a midfield consisting of both the Vieira twins, perhaps there is the slightest chance that the brothers lining up in the same team may not be quite as far away as it had previously appeared.
