Fabrizio Romano claims Aston Villa and Leeds United have opened talks to sign West Ham talent Sonny Perkins this summer. The young English striker made his senior debut for the Hammers during the 21-22 campaign.

Perkins, 18, started the campaign in the Under-18’s. But after four goals in four Premier League games at that level, he was quickly promoted to Under-23 level. He finished with stats of 10 goals in 20 Premier League 2 games.

It has seen the England Under-18 striker earn a first-team chance – even starting against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League. He also made a sub outing against Rapid Vienna – and in the Premier League, against Leeds.

It seems to have left a lasting impression. Reports emerged last week that Leeds are interested, and now Romano says the Whites have opened talks to sign him in the coming weeks – as have Villa.

If West Ham let the London-born striker leave, it is a disaster. Perkins is a striker with enormous talent, and has proven as such by breaking into the first team. He was also an unused sub on nine occasions this season.

West Ham are set to compete in the Europa Conference League this season and it might just be the perfect platform to blood Perkins. A move to Leeds or Villa is hardly an improvement, if anything it is sideways in terms of game time.

A player Declan Rice once said had a “bright future”, Perkins must be kept at West Ham – and the Hammers are making a mistake if Leeds or Villa swoop to sign the talented forward.
