Fabrizio Romano has told his Here We Go podcast that Tottenham are still waiting for a “real proposal” from Villarreal for Giovani Lo Celso ahead of the summer. Villarreal want him permanently, or a loan for another season.
Lo Celso, 25, joined Villarreal on loan in January for the remainder of the campaign having started just two Premier League games for Tottenham during the first half of the season. He has since starred for Villarreal.
Although the Copa America winner has failed to score or provide an assist in his 12 Villarreal outings, he has proven to be a crucial part of Unai Emery’s side. He got the man-of-the-match award against Bayern Munich.
A game in which Villarreal won 1-0, with the second leg taking place in Munich this evening. Romano states that Villarreal want him beyond the summer but has been told that Tottenham want a permanent exit.
“Tottenham are still waiting for Villarreal to make an official proposal. From what I’m told, they want to discuss on Villarreal’s side with Tottenham to sign Lo Celso on a permanent deal.”
Romano continues: “Or to keep the player for one more season. But Tottenham want real money so there will be a discussion this summer.”
Romano on Lo Celso: What kind of fee can Tottenham expect?
Tottenham spent £27million to permanently sign Lo Celso from Real Betis. He has since struggled at Spurs, showing only glimpses of quality – scoring just eight goals in 84 Tottenham games, only one in the Premier League.
However, he won the Copa America, remains a crucial part of the Argentina side and his value is going up at Villarreal. A deal in the region of £20million would represent fair value for the ex-PSG midfielder.
