Tottenham have been linked with a move for Piero Hincapie in recent weeks, and while the player has signed a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Spurs are still interested in the defender.

However, the new deal that Hincapie signed with Leverkusen does not include a release clause, which gives the German club a lot of control in this situation.

This new contract means that any club wanting to sign the Ecuadorian will have to negotiate with Leverkusen, who are unlikely to let him leave on the cheap. After all, he has been fantastic over the past 12 months – described as ‘tremendous’ recently.

Hincapie is quickly establishing himself as one of the brightest young defenders in Europe, and he has already made a name for He joined Leverkusen in 2021 from Talleres de Cordoba, and he has impressed in his short time in Germany.

Tottenham are in need of defensive reinforcements, particularly on the left side of their back three and as a ball-playing left-footed centre-back,  Hincapie could be a good option for the north London club.

However, with Leverkusen holding all the cards in this situation, it remains to be seen whether Spurs will be able to sign the 20-year-old.

Tottenham have struggled defensively this season, and that left side is an area of weakness as Clement Lenglet has failed to impress while Ben Davies is still more of a natural left-back.

The addition of Hincapie would give them some much-needed quality and grit in that area of the pitch. However, they will need to work hard to convince Leverkusen to sell, and after he signed a new contract, it’s likely that they will have to pay a premium for the young South American’s services.

Hincapie’s new contract is a blow to Tottenham’s hopes of signing him, but it is clear that they are still interested in the defender.

Getting this deal done will be difficult, but it’s not impossible.
