Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo’s representatives have made it clear he remains committed to Manchester United.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE YouTube channel, the transfer guru eased United supporters’ fears surrounding the veteran forward.
Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford was cast into doubt by The Mirror after it claimed the living legend would walk away from the club if they failed to qualify for the Champions League next season.
At 37, the attacker’s tenure at the very top of the footballing pyramid is reaching its climax.
He arguably only has a couple of shots left at Europe’s biggest prize before the candle burns out.
As it stands, United will be involved in the competition again next season, but only if they hold on to their current fourth-place spot.
They could also win this year’s tournament, which restarts for Ralf Rangnick’s side tonight against Atletico Madrid, although few fans are backing them to lift the trophy in May.
Despite winning two Premier League games on the spin, the Red Devils remain an inconsistent outfit that are almost impossible to predict. And it’s irregularity on the pitch that has apparently riled Ronaldo off it.
Clearly intent on splashing the Portugal international’s name across headlines, The Mirror also ran a story about Ronaldo and Harry Maguire coming to blows over United’s armband.
Ronaldo remains loyal to United
While that paints a disastrous behind-the-scenes picture, Romano waded in with a reassuring declaration about CR7.
“I want to be 100 per cent honest. I was asking about Cristiano last week and the answer was he is not planning on leaving,” the journalist said.
“He’s just fighting for United, he doesn’t care about the captain’s armband.
“(There have been) lots of stories about Maguire and Ronaldo but on both sides, on the Maguire side and Ronaldo side, I received the same answer. They are not thinking about it, they are thinking about results.
“At the moment with Cristiano, (there’s) no problem and he’s not creating an issue with the club.”
Champion of champions
All Ronaldo ever wants to do is win. His whole aura revolves around lifting the shiniest pieces of silverware or being the best in the profession.
He may want to leave United in the summer but not before he’s done everything in his powers to claim yet another trophy.
That attitude could be the difference between Rangnick ending his interim reign empty handed or with a medal around his neck.
