Is Matthijs de Ligt joining Liverpool? Well that was the speculation for a while, but now Chelsea are emerging as strong opposition in the race for the centre-back.

It was reported this week that Liverpool have been ‘dreaming‘ about signing the 22-year-old Juventus defender this summer [TMW].

Apparently, Jurgen Klopp really wants to pair De Ligt alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Reds’ attack, but Chelsea have a genuine claim.

At least, that’s according to Fabrizio Romano.

The reliable Italian journalist has revealed on Twitter that the Stamford Bridge outfit are ‘genuinely interested’ in the young stalwart.

Romano has added that Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is a massive fan of the player.

Even if Chelsea do get him, De Ligt joining Liverpool might never have been plausible from the jump.

When you think about it, Klopp doesn’t really need additional centre-backs.

Yes, Van Dijk and Joel Matip are the wrong side of 30 and will decline over the coming years, making it vital that Liverpool think ahead to the future.

However, the Anfield outfit aren’t exactly struggling.

The German manager still has Van Dijk, Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate – four outstanding centre-back options.

De Ligt joining Liverpool sounds exciting on paper but when you study it, Chelsea makes a lot more sense than a transfer to Merseyside.
