Fabrizio Romano has said on the Tottenham Fan Chris Cowlin YouTube channel that Mauricio Pochettino reminded Georginio Wijnaldum about wanting him at Tottenham Hotspur to convince the departing Liverpool player to join him at Paris Saint-Germain.

The well-known and well-respected journalist has reported in The Guardian that Wijnaldum has signed a contract with PSG after choosing them over Barcelona.

The Netherlands international midfielder is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the month and will move to PSG on a free transfer.

Romano said on the Tottenham Fan Chris Cowlin YouTube channel: “Pochettino was calling Wijnaldum several times. He was telling him, ‘I wanted you five years ago when I was at Tottenham. Join me at Paris Saint-Germain. We have this big opportunity to stay together’.

“So Pochettino was key in the negotiations between Wijnaldum and Paris Saint-Germain.”

Pochettino did want Wijnaldum when the latter was at Newcastle United.

The 30-year-old himself said, as quoted in The Mirror, that he went to Pochettino’s house to discuss a potential move to Tottenham.

The Dutchman eventually joined Liverpool where he won the Premier League and the Champions League.

Pochettino has been strongly linked with a move back to Tottenham.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is on the hunt for a permanent manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in April.

However, Romano’s comments make it clear that Pochettino will not leave PSG for Spurs now.

After all, why would the Argentine be calling players and convincing them to move to PSG?
