Romano claims Chelsea now nearing deal for 19-goal Arsenal target

Chelsea are closing in on a deal to sign Montpellier striker Elye Wahi amid rumours of interest from Arsenal.

Elye Wahi could soon become a Chelsea player with the Blues ready to accelerate their move for the Montpellier talent.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Chelsea are ‘advancing in talks’ to sign Wahi.

Romano claims that Chelsea now want to accelerate the move this week in order to beat other clubs to Wahi’s signature.

It’s suggested that a new round of talks is imminent with Chelsea looking to secure an agreement with Montpellier as soon as possible.

Romano adds that Chelsea’s plan is to loan Wahi out for the 2023-24 season before bringing him back to Stamford Bridge.

There is a problem here though in that RMC Sport claimed just a few days ago that Wahi isn’t interested in joining Strasbourg.

Strasbourg have become Chelsea’s partner club after being purchased by BlueCo and Todd Boehly, so players will likely join the French club on loan this summer.

Wahi could be one of them but Chelsea may need to convince him into making the move.

Arsenal move looks unlikely for Elye Wahi

Wahi was always bound to attract major interest this summer.

The 20-year-old hit 19 goals in 33 Ligue 1 games for Montpellier last season, emerging as one of French football’s top young talents.

Part of the RMC Sport report last week suggested that Arsenal had made contact to sign Wahi.

The Gunners look set to see Wahi join their London rivals Chelsea instead but a move to the Emirates Stadium just doesn’t add up.

Kai Havertz has joined Arsenal this summer, giving Mikel Arteta another attacking option.

Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah remain at the club too and Folarin Balogun may be on the move rather than sit on the sidelines.

Balogun scored more Ligue 1 goals than Wahi last season and still isn’t going to break into the Arsenal side.

It’s therefore hard to see Arsenal investing in Wahi – they will just have to hope he doesn’t become a superstar at Chelsea.
