Romano claims £35m 'leader' could leave amid Newcastle United interest

Newcastle United target Kevin Danso could be heading back to the Premier League with talks underway over a potential move.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims that interest in Lens defender Danso is mounting.

Teams from Italy and Spain are also understood to be interested, but a return to England could be on the cards.

Romano claims that multiple Premier League clubs are in the race to sign Danso but Newcastle United may be a prime suitor.

A huge fee of around £35million was mentioned back then with Danso enjoying a great season with Lens.

Newcastle may well allow Jamaal Lascelles to leave the club this summer.

That means Eddie Howe and co will want another right-footed centre back to offer competition for Jamaal Lascelles.

Who is Newcastle United target Kevin Danso?

Danso was born in Austria to Ghanaian parents but moved to Milton Keynes at the age of just six.

After a spell in the Reading youth ranks, Danso joined MK Dons at under-9 level to really kickstart his career.

Danso came up through the MK Dons ranks alongside Dele Alli and the pair have been friends ever since.

Danso left MK Dons in 2014 though, joining Bundesliga side Augsburg.

The centre back became Augsburg’s youngest ever played to make a Bundesliga appearance at 18 years and 165 days back in 2017.

Southampton took a chance on Danso in 2019, taking him on loan for the season with an option to buy.

Danso didn’t really impress enough and the Saints sent him back to Germany, where he joined Fortuna Dusseldorf on loan.

Lens pounced in 2021 and Danso hasn’t looked back since, playing a key role for one of the most impressive teams in Ligue 1.

Still only 24, Danso has picked up 13 caps for Austria and is an intimidating presence at the back.

Hailed as a ‘leader’ by Lens coach Franck Haise, Danso appears ready for another Premier League chance – and Newcastle could give it to him.
