Fabrizio Romano claims Arsenal gem Marcelo Flores is set to join Spanish second-tier side Real Oviedo – Santi Cazorla’s boyhood club – on loan for the 2022-23 campaign. The move is a “done deal” according to Romano.

Flores, 18, has been impressive for both Arsenal’s Under-18 side and then their Under-23 team. Last season, he broke into the second string and scored four goals in 10 Premier League 2 appearances from midfield.

Such was his form, Flores even made his name onto the teamsheet for the 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League – but remained an unused substitute. The Canada-born talent has also won three senior caps for Mexico.

But now, he is set for his first loan move away from Arsenal – to Spain. Real Oviedo, the club where Cazorla spent seven years at academy level, are set to bring the Arsenal teenager in on a loan deal for the 22-23 campaign.

A brilliant move for Flores. The second-tier of Spanish football is of very strong quality and will certainly test the Mexico international. If he impresses at that level, at this stage of his career, he could return to play for the Gunners.

Arsenal know they have a serious talent in Flores and will have hand-picked Oviedo from a number of clubs chasing him. Indeed, reports in March said that Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of the playmaker.

A huge opportunity for Flores, then, who will be hoping he can make a real impact in Spainish football.
