Romaine Sawyers gives verdict on West Bromwich Albion and colleagues

The Baggies boyhood fan is back at The Hawthorns after his summer switch and has been great for West Brom this term.

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Romaine Sawyers has spoken highly of three of his teammates, with Chris Brunt arguably getting the highest praise and admitting that playing alongside such a “class act” still excites him, as he hailed the entire club’s Premier League infrastructure (official website).

At the end of July, the 27-year-old returned to the club where he came through the ranks, signing a three-year contract after being bought from Brentford – where he was captain – for an undisclosed fee reported to be £2.9 million (Express & Star).

Sawyers’ return to The Hawthorns was met with much fanfare as many of the West Brom faithful welcomed back the boyhood Baggie, who in turn very much reciprocated his love for the club with kind and complimentary comments.

Ahead of Albion’s Championship game against Huddersfield Town at The Hawthorns on Sunday, Sawyers spoke of how the club’s infrastructure and personnel, from the players to the coaches and backroom staff, are all top-flight standard.

The midfield lynchpin told the WBA website: “The facilities are Premier League. When I arrived at The Hawthorns, coming from Brentford, we always thought: ‘This is a Premier League club.’ Pitch, lights, stadium…the men you are playing against. Gareth Barry’s career speaks for itself, Jake Livermore has played for England.

“Chris Brunt. Sounds ridiculous but just playing alongside him [Brunt] still excites me. I’m in training and he’s still a class act. He wants to push you to new boundaries – as does the manager. The manager’s resume speaks for itself. The sports’ scientists, fitness guys, everything… the platform is there for us to take the next step. I need to push myself to be the best I can be and hopefully that resonates with everyone else.”

Sawyers has made eight appearances in all competitions this season for West Brom – seven in the Championship and one in the Carabao Cup – and has been key for Slaven Bilic’s side in remaining unbeaten in the league.
