Celtic were said to be battling with West Bromwich Albion to sign Romaine Sawyers, with Neil Lennon keen on the playmaker.
Sawyers moved to West Brom for £3 million this summer (Sky Sports), but Celtic did have bids rejected for the playmaker before he made the switch, according to the Daily Record.
Celtic had felt that the addition of Sawyers could improve Neil Lennon’s squad, but they were unable to agree a fee.
And Saywers’ comments suggest that even if Celtic had matched Brentford’s asking price for the 27-year-old they still wouldn’t have been able to convince him to pick them over West Brom.
“When the opportunity came up to return, I had to take it,” Sawyers said.
“It’s massive for me to be back. There is no other team that means as much to me as West Bromwich Albion. Everyone who knows me, knows that.
“I think this is unfinished business for both me and the club.”
Celtic may never have had the opportunity to bring in Sawyers, but missing out on him after showing interest has just added to the frustration around Parkhead.
Celtic have made no secret of their desire to bring in more quality this summer, but they have made slow progress.
Neil Lennon’s side have only made a handful of additions so far, and they are still in the market to do more business before the transfer window closes.
Celtic’s domestic season begins on Saturday, when they take on St. Johnstone at Parkhead.
