Roma star told £10.5m Newcastle, Man Utd transfer will be ‘shame for him’

Ezio Sella urges Paulo Dybala to stay at Roma and reject a bargain transfer to Manchester United or Newcastle. The Premier League rivals are showing an interest for this summer.

Roma have seen Dybala produce a superb season so far since moving in a free transfer last July. The 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina signed a three-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico after his deal with Juventus expired. He had spent the prior seven years in Turin.

Dybala has lit up Serie A at the Giallorossi under Jose Mourinho with eight goals and seven assists this term. The 29-year-old has also offered two goals across four Europa League ties and one in two Coppa Italia outings. He has also missed eight fixtures due to a thigh injury.

But what future Dybala holds at Roma is uncertain with Manchester United and Newcastle exploring his transfer. Calciomercato reports that the Red Devils and Toon have registered their interest in a swoop. The 36-cap playmaker could even move for only €12m (£10.5m).

Roma included a €20m (£18m) release clause in Dybala’s contract but only for rival Serie A sides. The figure drops for foreign clubs and has piqued the interest of several teams in his transfer. Mourinho leaving the Stadio Olimpico could also heighten the chances of a move.

A separate clause in Dybala’s contract with Roma would automatically remove the release clause and renew his deal. It would further afford the Argentine a pay rise from his €4.5m-a-year (£77k-a/w) wage to €6m (£103k-a/w). But he can override any automatic extension.

Yet former Roma star Sella believes Dybala would make a mistake by targeting a transfer in the summer amid Manchester United and Newcastle’s interest. He is confident the Laguna Larga native has found his perfect home at the Stadio Olimpico and would regret leaving.

“I think he has found his ideal environment in Rome and it would be a shame to lose him,” Sella told TuttoMercatoWEB. “But it would be a shame for him, too. 

“We know the problem for the Argentine. In the past, he has often had physical problems. But I repeat: for him, staying in Rome is one of the best solutions.”
