Greek giants Panathinaikos are reportedly keen on Newcastle United’s Rolando Aarons and Celtic’s Scottish Premiership champion Johnston.

Mikey Johnston of Celtic (73) scores his team's second goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Hearts at Celtic Park on May 19, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Panathinaikos appear to be scouring Britain for an exciting young winger. And it seems that they have settled on two options; Newcastle United’s Rolando Aarons and Celtic starlet Mikey Johnston.

The Scottish Sun claimed this week that Panathinaikos watched 20-year-old Johnston in action during May’s cup final victory against Hearts at Hampden Park.

A loan move appeared to be on the cards. But, crucially, Johnston is not the only speedy forward on Panathinaikos’ radar.

According to SDNA, 23-year-old Aarons could be on his way to Greece instead with his Newcastle career seemingly coming to an end.

Once one of the most promising forwards in English football, injuries have taken their toll on the former England U20 international and it appears that he is crying out for a fresh start.

Panathinaikos could hand him exactly that. SDNA claims that Newcastle could allow Aarons to leave on loan with an option to make Aarons’ deal permanent for a fee in the region of £6 million.

Now, there is probably only space for either Aarons or Johnston in Panathinaikos’ squad but, as it stands, it seems that the Newcastle player is far more likely to make the switch.

Johnston took to Instagram on Friday morning to reveal that he has been handed the number 19 shirt at Celtic after making his breakthrough wearing 73. Is this the biggest sign yet that he will be sticking around in Glasgow?
